Cirrhosis is a serious condition that affects the liver and can lead to life-threatening complications. It is caused by long-term damage to the liver, usually due to excessive alcohol consumption, viral hepatitis, or other chronic diseases. Cirrhosis can cause scarring of the liver, which interferes with its ability to function properly. Symptoms of cirrhosis include jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, fluid buildup in the abdomen (ascites), and confusion. Treatment for cirrhosis includes lifestyle changes and medications to manage symptoms and reduce further damage to the liver.
